Self-Paced Workshops

  • Presented By: Rebecca Lee, LICSW

    Course Description:

This continuing education opportunity was created for therapists, social workers, psychologists and mental health workers who want to learn more about building an anti-oppressive practice. This training will address how systems of racism, oppression and colonialism manifest in social work and counseling practice and how we can reduce these impacts and lessen the ways in which we perpetuate these within our own practice.

We will explore the gaps and limitations of the institutionalized frameworks that we’re often given to support our clients. We’ll look at exploring our own location of self and how to incorporate critical self-reflection on our own biases, thought patterns, communication styles and language. We’ll explore ways in which we can begin to decolonize our practice, our professional self to more ethically serve our communities.

    Training Objectives:

    1. Identify our own biases and the broader systemic structure that create barriers to open dialogue around oppression, racism, our own potential perpetuation of these systems.
    2. Describe the concept of “location of self” and identify the rationale for why this is important between clinician and client.
    3. Identify limitations of our field and frameworks, language, communication patterns that impede authentic professional interactions
    4. Name imbalances of power within the therapy space and how these can be reduced or exacerbated based on clinician awareness and intentionality.
    5. Identify specific areas within your practice you can begin to decolonize today.
